Kine Each week told you «New strong ‘crooks fall out’ are peopled having a colourful assortment out-of essential and arresting characters, and they, skilfully controlled of the copywriter and you will movie director, permit the movie so you’re able to tread liquids effortlessly. It is only to the finish which starts to break down, although smack-up finale rescues it on the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will wisely dialogued, it has zero high challenge within the living off their incredibly unappealing identity.» [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Flick Bulletin told you «The movie movements in the an easy rate, brand new conversation are advanced and you will characterisations generally effective. The latest film’s publisher and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess video game, for mortal limits, between Johnny, his company (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a beneficial cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sibling (Nina Foch) spent some time working in the gambling enterprise and you may dated a corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The new caustically epigrammatic software, the new cast’s suavely regulated body gestures away from love and you will threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and smartly cocky photos (plus his political conscience) get this to pugnacious but really detail by detail spectacle an invisible antique of your own genre.» [ 10 ]

Pic keeps activity and you may anticipation, and you can specific quick satisfies off humor to include taste. Ace shows by the Penis Powell, as a gaming domestic overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, since the an authorities inspector, along with up the score . Whilst plot comes after a familiar trend, the fresh characterizations is fresh in addition to shows sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialogue are terse and you can relevant, preventing the psychological, phoney contact. Strange digital camera basics come-along once in a while so you’re able to intensify notice and you will briefly arrest the interest. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing as manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand-new creator and you can representative music producer, as well as aids in making this a softer development.» [ 11 ]

Its mainly a matter of watching Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably if you find yourself a massive throw away from stars and you may actresses bring your classic support. Evelyn Keyes plays the good nothing woman who brings forth the latest finest in him and Ellen Drew ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen which becomes him into jams. Thomas Gomez was fatty given that villain and you will Lee J. Cobb really does an alternative in a position trip while the a weary cops inspector exactly who in the end closes the outcome. Many drinking and you will puffing is accomplished by the all of the worried.» [ several ]
